Now that mainstream skincare companies are jumping onto the natural skincare bandwagon, there's more hype now with utilizing milk powders into their products (including our own). However, it's hard to understand why they put them in the products and which ones are best for your skin. After researching, we've found there are about 5 different milk powders that are actually useful for your skin: Buttermilk, Goat milk, Camel milk (really?! Find out more below!), whole milk, and coconut milk powder.
Buttermilk powder has so many benefits to your skin, but it is best for dry, acne prone skin.
Buttermilk is full of lactic acid and natural probiotics. It will leave you will glowing skin, that is a skin that is cleansed thoroughly and has its own natural lustre without any beauty product. It is an excellent cleanser for your skin and will not only lessen red spots, but clean out your pores if you're more acne prone. It also helps with sunburns, if you ended up soaking in the sun for too long, as well as get instant relief from the burning sensation.
Camel Milk Powder (Really?!)
Seriously, who would have thought that milk from a camel no less would be great for your skin? Thanks to Ancient Egyptians (yup it's been around that long!) camel milk powder can easily be greater than acid exfoliators, hydrating masks, and vitamin C serums all in one, and it's all natural! This milk powder is best for sensitive and dry skin.
Goat Milk Powder
Goat milk powder is another ancient skincare remedy (Thank you again Ancient Egyptians!) that is perfect for those with sensitive skin or those with specific skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
Goats milk is the only milk powder with all the essential micronutrients with the appropriate amount of concentrations without needing any additives. Some of these micronutrients include vitamins A, B1, B6, B12, C, D, and E. Goat’s milk contains traces of selenium, zinc, copper, and iron, which keep our skin nourished and healthy. Goat milk is rich in fat molecules (fatty acids), proteins, and it naturally contains glycerin which boosts its moisturizing qualities. It’s a natural emollient, and it gets quickly absorbed by the skin, creating a barrier that keeps it protected and smooth.
Goat milk powder contains anti-aging, anti-bacterial, and anti-oxidant properties which all help with treating acne. Goat’s milk has high selenium content, which has been proven to protect the skin from UV rays. Selenium also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that prevent cell damage and inflammation caused by UV rays.
Whole Milk Powder
Cow's milk is something so readily available, most likely you already have a gallon of it sitting in your fridge right now. We all know the benefit of ingesting this milk, but who would have thought using it on your skin would have benefits as well? This milk powder is best for oily, acne-prone skin.
Still full of lactic acid (even if it may be lower than the other powders mentioned above), it acts as a gentle cleanser and can exfoliate your skin to remove access oil and makeup. The lactic acid in milk may help remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth and may also encourage skin cell renewal.
Coconut Milk Powder
Unlike the other milk powders mentioned before, this is a great vegan alternative to milk powders, and it is also the only vegan milk powder available to use. Did you know that coconut milk isn’t actually “milk” at all? It is a liquid that is naturally found inside mature coconuts, stored within the coconut ‘meat’. When you crack open a fresh coconut, the liquid that leaks out is coconut water. But when you blend the coconut ‘meat’ and strain it, the result is a thicker coconut ‘milk’. Coconut milk powder is best for dry skin and those with specific skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne.
Coconut milk is packed with vitamins C, E, B1, B3, B5, and B6 as well as iron, selenium,sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Coconut milk contains good concentration of lauric acid, a medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) which gets converted to monolaurin in the body, a compound with antiviral and antibacterial properties. Lauric acid is also found in mother’s milk and is known to promote brain development, bone health and immunity. In fact, coconut milk is the closest thing on the planet that comes identically to mother's milk! So what does this do for our skin? It is a great moisturiser due its soothing properties. The natural fatty acids in coconut milk help treat dry and irritated skin and remove harmful bacteria. It also helps sunburns by cooling the skin and reducing pain, swelling and redness.
No matter which kind of milk powder you use, they are all perfect for dry, sensitive, or acne prone skin. Milk powders are full of nutrients that help your skin and provide many different properties depending on what you're looking for.
